Mainframe
Mainframes are very powerful computers used to provide computer services and resources to workstations connected to it.
The workstations connected to a mainframe are usually of thin client type.
Mainframes were used in big organizations and institutes to carry out intensive calculations, like statistics calculations, and several hundred workstations could be connected to a single mainframe.
Mainframes are not used anymore and are substituted by client/server technology.
